Citalopram's Systematic (IUPAC) name:
1-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-1-(4-fluorophenyl)-1,3-dihydroisobenzofuran-5-carbonitrile Chemical Formula: C20H21FN2O

Celexa is used to treat depression. It is an antidepressant in a group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It works by restoring the balance of serotonin, a natural occuring substance found in the brain, which helps to improve certain mood problems.

The medication is available as tablets or as an oral solution:
  • Celexa 20 mg - pink, oval, scored tablets
  • Celexa 40 mg - white, oval, scored tablets
  • Celexa Oral Solution 10 mg per teaspoon (5 mL) - peppermint-flavored solution

  • The active agent of the medication is Citalopram. The tablets also contain the following inactive ingredients: copolyvidone, corn starch, crosscarmellose sodium, glycerin, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, and titanium dioxide. Iron oxides are used as coloring agents in the beige (10 mg) and pink (20 mg) tablets.

    Before taking Celexa (Citalopram), tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have:
  • liver or kidney disease;
  • seizures or epilepsy;
  • bipolar disorder (manic depression); or
  • a history of drug abuse or suicidal thoughts.
  • If you have any of these conditions, you may not be able to use Celexa, or you may need a dosage adjustment or special tests during treatment.

    You may have thoughts about suicide when you first start taking Celexa, especially if you are younger than 24 years old. Tell your doctor if you have worsening symptoms of depression or suicidal thoughts. Your doctor will need to check you at regular visits for at least the first 12 weeks of treatment.

    Celexa should be administered at an initial dose of 20 mg once daily, generally with an increase to a dose of 40 mg/day. Dose increases should usually occur in increments of 20 mg at intervals of no less than one week. Although certain patients may require a dose of 60 mg/day, the only study pertinent to dose response for effectiveness did not demonstrate an advantage for the 60 mg/day dose over the 40 mg/day dose; doses above 40 mg are therefore not ordinarily recommended.

    Celexa should be administered once daily, in the morning or evening, with or without food.

    The efficacy of Celexa in maintaining an antidepressant response for up to 24 weeks following 6 to 8 weeks of acute treatment. Do not stop using Celexa without first talking to your doctor.

    Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take the next one as directed. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor.

    Possible side effects of the medication include: fatigue, drowsiness, dry mouth, increased sweating (hyperhidrosis), trembling, headache, dizziness, sleep disturbances, insomnia, cardiac arrhythmia, blood pressure changes, nausea and/or vomiting, diarrhea, heightened anorgasmia in females, impotence and ejaculatory problems in males. In rare cases, some allergic reactions, convulsions, mood changes, anxiety and confusion have been reported. Also sedation is possible.

    Before taking Celexa, tell your doctor if you are using any of the following medicines:
  • carbamazepine (Tegretol);
  • cimetidine (Tagamet);
  • lithium (Lithobid, Eskalith);
  • a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin);
  • any other antidepressants such as amitriptyline (Elavil), escitalopram (Lexapro), fluoxetine (Prozac (Fluoxetine), Sarafem), fluvoxamine (Luvox), imipramine (Tofranil), nortriptyline (Pamelor), paroxetine (Paxill), or sertraline (Zoloft); or
  • almotriptan (Axert), frovatriptan (Frova), sumatriptan (Imitrex), naratriptan (Amerge), rizatriptan (Maxalt), or zolmitriptan (Zomig).

  • If you are using any of these drugs, you may not be able to use Celexa, or you may need dosage adjustments or special tests during treatment.

You must wait at least 14 days after stopping an MAOI before you can take Celexa. After you stop taking Celexa, you must wait at least 14 days before you start taking an MAOI.

    FDA pregnancy category C. SSRI antidepressants may cause serious or life-threatening lung problems in newborn babies whose mothers take the medication during pregnancy.
