Klonopin (Rivotril) - Purchase Online

Brand names: Klonopin (the United States, Roche), Rivotril, Ravotril, Rivatril (Europe, South America, Canada, India, and Australia)
Generic name: Clonazepam
Clonazepam's Systematic (IUPAC) name: 6-(2-chlorophenyl)-9-nitro-2,5-diazabicyclo [5.4.0]undeca-5,8,10,12-tetraen-3-one or 5-(2-chlorophenyl)-1,3-dihydro7-nitro-2H-1,4-benzodiazepin-2-one
Chemical Formula: C15H10ClN3O3

Klonopin (Rivotril, Clonazepam) is in a class of drugs called benzodiazepines. It affects chemicals in your brain that may become unbalanced and cause seizures or symptoms of panic disorder. Because of its strong anxiolytic and anticonvulsant properties, Klonopin (Rivotril, Clonazepam) is said to be among the class of "highly potent" benzodiazepines.

Klonopin (Rivotril, Clonazepam) may be prescribed for:
  • Epilepsy
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Panic disorder
  • Initial treatment of mania, together with firstline drugs such as lithium, haloperidol or risperidone
  • Restless legs syndrome
  • Use as a muscle relaxant (Off Label Use)
  • Use as a sedative for sleep (Off Label Use). Not used that often because of clonazepam's long half-life may cause next day effects.

  • Available as:
  • Scored tablets containing 0.5 mg, 1 mg or 2 mg clonazepam/Roche. Each tablet also contains lactose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose and corn starch
  • Orally disintegrating tablets (wafers) (0.125, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, and 2 mg)

  • Rivotril is also available as oral solution (drops, 2.5 mg/mL), as well as solution for injection or intravenous infusion, containing 1 mg clonazepam per ampoule.

Klonopin is administered orally. In order to minimize drowsiness, the initial dose for infants and children (Up to 10 years of age or 30 kg of body weight) should be between 0.01 and 0.03 mg/kg/day but not to exceed 0.05 mg/kg/day given in two or three divided doses.

The initial dose for adults should not exceed 1.5 mg/day divided into three doses. Dosage may be increased in increments of 0.5 to 1 mg every three days until seizures are adequately controlled or until side effects preclude any further increase. Maximum recommended daily dose is 20 mg.

Take each regular oral tablet with a full glass of water. Swallow the tablet whole. The Klonopin orally-disintegrating tablets can be taken without water. The tablet will disintegrate rapidly in the mouth and can be easily swallowed with or without liquid.

It is important to take Klonopin (Rivotril) regularly to get the most benefit. Do not take a double dose of this medication. Skip the dose you missed and take only the next regularly scheduled dose.

Caution using high dosages of Klonopin (Rivotril). Doses higher than 0.5 - 1 mg per day is associated with significant sedation.

Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Klonopin (Rivotril) will cause drowsiness and may cause dizziness. If you experience drowsiness or dizziness, avoid these activities.

Alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness while taking Klonopin (Rivotril). Alcohol may also increase the risk of having a seizure.

Klonopin (Rivotril) may be habit forming. Physical and/or psychological dependence can occur, and withdrawal effects are possible if the medication is stopped suddenly after prolonged or high-dose treatment. Long-term use (more than 2?4 weeks) can lead to a number of problems, including muscle weakness and fatigue, tolerance, physical dependence and withdrawal syndromes upon discontinuation. The benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome, which may appear during reduction or withdrawal of Clonazepam treatment, can be reduced in intensity with gradual reduction of dosage.

Common side effects of Klonopin (Rivotril) include:
  • Drowsiness
  • Impairment of cognition and judgment
  • Pupil dilation
  • Irritability and aggression
  • Psychomotor agitation
  • Lack of motivation
  • Impaired motor function
  • Nausea
  • Anterograde amnesia (common with higher doses)
  • Some users report hangover-like symptoms of being drowsy, having a headache, being sluggish, and being irritable after waking up if the medication is taken before sleep. This is likely the result of the medication's long half-life, which continues to affect the user after waking up, as well as its disruption of the REM cycle.

  • Symptoms of a Klonopin (Rivotril) overdose may include drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, a slow heart beat, hypotension, difficulty breathing, difficulty walking and talking, worsening seizures, yellowing of the skin or eyes, hallucinations or severe confusion, changes in vision, an appearance of being drunk, and unconsciousness. In severe cases coma is possible.

Klonopin (Rivotril) is not recommended for use in those under 18. Use in very young children may be especially hazardous.

Klonopin (Rivotril) should not be used in patients with a history of sensitivity to benzodiazepines, nor in patients with clinical or biochemical evidence of significant liver disease. It may be used in patients with open angle glaucoma who are receiving appropriate therapy, but is contraindicated in acute narrow angle glaucoma.

Klonopin (Rivotril) may aggravate hepatic porphyria.

Klonopin (Rivotril) when used late in pregnancy may result in the development of a severe benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome in the neonate and also floppy infant syndrome. Withdrawal symptoms from benzodiazepines in the neonate may include hypotonia, and reluctance to suck, to apnoeic spells, cyanosis, and impaired metabolic responses to cold stress. These symptoms may persist for hours or months after birth.
