Hydrocodone (related to Codeine) is in a class of drugs called narcotic analgesics. It relieves pain. Acetaminophen is a less potent pain reliever that increases the effects of Hydrocodone. Together, Hydrocodone and Acetaminophen are used to relieve moderate-to-severe pain.

Hydrocodone is commonly available in tablet, capsule, and syrup form and is often synthesized with other analgesic compounds like Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen.

As a narcotic, Hydrocodone relieves pain by binding to opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord.

Daily consumption of Hydrocodone should not exceed 40 milligrams in patients not tolerant to opiates. Hydrocodone is habit-forming, and can lead to physical and psychological addiction. It is not available in pure form in the United States due to a separate regulation, and is always sold with an NSAID, Acetaminophen or an antihistamine. The presence of Acetaminophen in Hydrocodone-containing products deters many drug users from taking excessive amounts. Taking 10,000 to 15,000 milligrams (10 to 15 grams) of Acetaminophen in a period of 24 hours typically results in severe hepatotoxicity, and doses in the range of 15,000?20,000 milligrams a day have been reported as fatal. You should pay special attention to the contents of your medicine during treatment, in order not to exceed the safety limits.

Avoid alcohol while taking Hydrocodone and Acetaminophen. Alcohol can increase drowsiness and dizziness caused by the medication, possibly resulting in unconsciousness and death. Also, Acetaminophen can be damaging to the liver when taken with alcohol.

Hydrocodone and Acetaminophen may increase the effects of other drugs that cause drowsiness, including antidepressants, antihistamines, pain relievers, anxiety medicines, seizure medicines, and muscle relaxants. Dangerous sedation, dizziness, or drowsiness may occur if Hydrocodone and Acetaminophen is taken with any of these medications.

Hydrocodone and Acetaminophen is in the FDA pregnancy category C. This means that it is not known whether it will be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment. Hydrocodone and Acetaminophen pass into breast milk and may affect a nursing infant. Do not take these medications without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Hydrocodone may cause drowsiness or dizziness. If you experience drowsiness or dizziness, avoid these activities.

Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have
  • a history of alcohol or drug abuse;
  • kidney disease;
  • liver disease;
  • asthma;
  • urinary retention;
  • an enlarged prostate;
  • hypothyroidism;
  • seizures or epilepsy;
  • gallbladder disease;
  • a head injury; or
  • Addison's disease.
  • You may not be able to take Hydrocodone, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions listed above.

    Take Hydrocodone and Acetaminophen exactly as directed by your doctor. Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Do not take a double dose of this medication. Wait the prescribed amount of time before taking the next dose.

    Common side effects include dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, drowsiness, constipation, vomiting, and euphoria. Some less common side effects are allergic reaction, blood disorders, changes in mood, mental fogginess, anxiety, lethargy, difficulty urinating, spasm of the ureter, irregular or depressed respiration, and rash.

    Tell your doctor of any unusual reactions when you use Hydrocodone, and seek emergency medical attention if you suddenly feel bad.

    Hydrocodone and Acetaminophen may cause constipation. Drink plenty of water (six to eight full glasses a day) to lessen this side effect. Increased fiber in the diet may also help to alleviate constipation.

    Do not take hydrocodone and acetaminophen if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) in the last 14 days. Dangerous side effects could result.
